One of the founding members of Gainax, Japan's most progressive anime studios, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was the character designer and an animation director for their 1987 film, ROYAL SPACE FORCE: THE WINGS OF HONNEAMISE and their hit 1990 television show NADIA: THE SECRET OF BLUE WATER.  NEON GENESIS EVANGELION is Sadamoto's first full length manga work.

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION VOL. 1 contains special bonus commentary on the series, provided by EVANGELION director Hideaki Anno and mechanical designer Ikuto Yamashita, that is not available in Viz'a monthly EVANGELION comic!
